Rōpata Taylor

Chair

Rōpata is of Ngāti Rārua and Te Ᾱtiawa descent. He holds the following positions:
     - Chair of Whakarewa
     - Ex-officio member of the Investment
       Committee
     - Member of the Education, Audit & Risk,
       Remuneration, and Whakapapa Committees

In addition, Rōpata serves as the General Manager of People & Culture at Wakatū Incorporation. He graduated from the university of Otago and previously worked as a secondary school teacher and tertiary lecturer.

Jeremy Banks

Vice Chair

Jeremy Banks is of Ngāti Rārua, Rangitāne and Ngāti Kuia descent. He was appointed as a Trustee of Ngāti Rārua Ᾱtiawa Iwi Trust in 2013 and in 2019 was appointed as Vice Chair. He is Chair of the Remuneration committee and a member of the Investment, Audit & Risk and Whakapapa committees. Jeremy and his wife Melissa run Plink Software, a Nelson based kaupapa Māori software company. Jeremy is a Director for Wakatū Incorporation and also holds a variety of other governance roles.

Barney Thomas

Trustee

Barney's iwi connections are as follows:
     - Through his mother: Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti
       Tama, Ngāti Toa, and Te Ᾱtiawa.
     - Through his father: Ngāi Tahu.

Barney has held various roles and positions, including:
     - Trustee of Ngāti Rārua Ᾱtiawa Iwi Trust
       since its inception.
     - Vice Chair of Ngāti Rārua Ᾱtiawa Iwi Trust
       from 1998 until 2019.
     - Director for Wakatū Incorporation.
     - Chair of Te Whanake committee.
     - Former Chair of Ngāti Rārua Iwi Trust until
       his retirement in 2005.
     - Served on the Board of Trustees for
       Whakarewa School from 1991 to 1993.
     - Currently the Pou Tairangahau for the
       Department of Conservation in the
       Nelson/Marlborough area (50%).
     - Currently the Pou Wakahaere for Te
       Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua (50%).
     - Formerly associated with the Inland
       Revenue Department and the        Department of Labour.

Barney is married to Shona, who is described as patient and supportive. They have three children: Renee, Fraser, and Jackson. Including a granddaughter named Sophia.

Paul Morgan

Trustee

Paul Morgan is of Ngāti Rārua and Te Mahurehure descent. He is a member of the following committees: Te Whanake, Audit and Risk, and Whakapapa. Over the years, he has held several commercial directorships, including Chairman of Wakatū Incorporation and land trustee of Te Ᾱwhina Marae. Additionally, Paul has been involved in various government-appointed advisory groups and industry initiatives.

Emma Park

Trustee

Emma is of Te Ᾱtiawa descent and was appointed as a Trustee in April 2008. She holds the positions of Chair for the Audit and Risk and Education committees, as well as interim Chair for the Investment committee. Emma is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Directors. Currently residing in Taranaki with her partner and their tama, she works as an independent contractor, offering financial accounting services to different organisations and Iwi Trusts.

Mereama Chase

Trustee

Mereama is of Ngāti Rārua and Te Ātiawa descent. She was appointed as a Trustee in 2015 and is a member of the Investment, Te Whanake, and Education committees.

Mereama has extensive experience in public management and is currently a Director at Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission, where she leads advice on the design and direction of New Zealand's Public Service.

Mereama is a graduate of Victoria University and holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Māori Studies. She lives in Wellington with her husband and three tamariki.

John Katene

Trustee

John is of Te Ātiawa descent. He connects to the Trust through his tupuna Hōhaia Rangiauru. He was reappointed to the board in 2017, having spent several years previously as a Trustee.

John is a member of the Te Whanake committee. He has spent over twenty years as an Iwi Monitor, appointed by Te Ātiawa, with a focus on Culture Health Indicators (CHI) in Motueka. He is very familiar with the whenua and has lived in Motueka all of his life, apart from working in the mines in Australia.

John is a member of the Motueka Christian Fellowship, and his church is an important part of his life.

Rima was born and raised in Motueka by her parents, Warren and Joyce Stephens. She knows the whenua and the whānau who live in Motueka. She has worked in the Motueka community in different industries and loves the place. Rima still lives here on their whenua with her husband, son, daughter-in-law, and four moko.

Rima recognized the need to understand better the responsibility, complexity, and skills that are required to serve our whānau, and over the last ten years, she has made the commitment to upskill herself in the areas of governance through the Institute of Directors and Māori leadership programmes.

Rima is an active member of a number of boards in our rohe - Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua, Te Āwhina Marae, Manawhenua ki Mohua, Ngāti Rārua whakapapa komiti, Motueka Museum, Nelson Marlborough Conservation Board, and she serves her Iwi as a mandated representative.

Joanie Wilson

Tumu Whakarae

Joanie hails from the beautiful Whakatū and is of Ngāti Rārua, Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Tama, Ngāi Tahu, and Ngāti Tūwharetoa descent. She is an Associate Director for Wakatū Inc, Trustee member of Ngāti Koata Iwi Trust Board, and a previous Director for Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Prior to joining Whakarewa, Joanie held the regional role of Strategic Advisor Māori for NMWC, Ministry of Education, and prior to that, she was an Early Childhood teacher. Joanie holds both a BTchLn and tohu in Poutahu Whakaakoranga. Joanie is the wife of Josh Wilson and the mother of Bella and Elias.

Nichola Vessy

Project Coordinator & Office Manager

Nichola was appointed to the role of Project Coordinator and Office Manager for Ngāti Rārua Ᾱtiawa Iwi Trust in August 2013. She is also responsible for providing specialist support to the Te Whanake strategic programme.

Nichola has had extensive experience in both the health and education sectors in Australia and New Zealand. Born on the West Coast and educated in Nelson and Canterbury, she now lives in Richmond.
